Nigel Hobbs

I specialise in Raku fired work, the Japanese technique of firing to a temperature around 1000°C when the hot work is taken out of the kiln and reduced in sawdust before quenching in water.

This creates unpredictable and exciting surfaces. Other finishes involve decorating the hot work using horse hair - a Native American technique. I am developing techniques using other materials to burn onto the surface of the work as well as developing coloured Raku glazes.

I also produce thrown stoneware or porcelain pieces all usually decorative.
